I have a 98 exlorer sport. 6 cylinder, 2 wheel drive, automatic. 270,000 miles, with no transmission overhaul so far. For the past few months I have the problem that when I first start the engine and everything is still cold, if I shift into reverse, the transmission does not go into reverse gear for 15 - 30 seconds, occassionally even a minute of delay before the reverse gear engages. There is no unusual noise, and no vibration, or other noticeable problem. The transmission has no delay ever when going into drive, only reverse, and only when everything is starting out from a cold start. Any idea about this?

Try cleaning the contacts and using di-electric grease on the pins and see if that helps. Other than that, you could take it to Autozone or Advanced auto parts and see if they pull any codes.
