I took my 97 Ford explorer to get smog checked. It failed. The mechanic send my computer was dead. It wasn't responding and i will need to have it replaced. I need to know what computer he is talking about. Is it the powertrain computer or the ECM (engine control module)? Also...where are these two devices located? Can I replace them myself?

If the computer was dead, then the damn thing would not run.

Does the cigar lighter work? That same fuse powers the Diagnostic Link Connector and that is probably what's going on since he cannot scan the system.
