frown clicking noise under the hood on start

Yes I have a clicking noise when I start up my 98 explorer xlt. It gets faster as I rev the engine. It doesnt do it all the time but about 85% of the time. A friend said it might be the rocker arms but I have no clue. Can u please offer your opinion on what it might be. It is a constant ticking under the hood. I also have a problem with reverse sometimes not alot maybe once a month where reverse sticks and I have to give it a little rev to kick in. No prob with the other gears just reverse.

Re: clicking noise under the hood on start

Another possible clicking noise, could be a 'leaking' plug wire.
Tranny.... have you ever had the fluid and filter changed?

If its the 4.0L SOHC then there is a TSB or service action to replace the timing chain tensioner, install an oil restricter in the oil passage and replace the intake gaskets because of a rough idle issue. Once you remove the intake the tensioner and oil passage is accessible. There is a full parts package that includes everything from Ford.
