The check engine light came on in my 1997 ford explorer 4.0L SOHC. I took it to the shop and they said it was:

*P 0171 BANK 1 LEAN.

*P 0174 BANK 2 LEAN.

He gave me a few things that could be wrong.

1. Intake gasket leaking
2. Bad MAF
3. Bad DPFE

They want to do an air leak test. Im not sure what that test does.

I dont want to just start throwing parts at it. What is wrong with it???

Clean the MAF, and Replace the DpFe....these are the most comon causes for the Code.

I cleaned the MAF. I will replace the DPFE next. This engine VERY cold-blodded. I need to keep pushing on the gas pedal to keep it running when I first start it in the morning, but when it is warmed up, I dont have any other trouble all day, it runs like a champ.

With the problem running when cold , might be worth checking engine cooling temp sensor .

Where, exactly, is the engine cooling temp sensor? By the way, the temp of the engine is good when warmed up. It stays just below mid-way up on the gauge.
