Re: coolant problems
I had that exact same problem where it dripped off the seam where the back of the block meets the transmission and it was the lower intake manifold gasket. Apparently, it's somewhat common on the 4.0 engines. The new gasket you get doesn't look the same - it would appear that the company that made the gasket (FelPro) found a solution by which you seal the rear end with nothing but a big bead of silicon. I thought I had the wrong gasket at first! It's a pretty easy job but it takes an entire day as long as you make sure you get the wires and vacuum hoses back where they're supposed to be. When I did it, it didn't start right off or run worth a damn, but I think I managed to get a little water in the cylinders. It ran great after I got it running for about 5 minutes. The problem I had with mine was that the gasket split on the outside of a water channel on the passenger side on the very very back of the block and there is no way you can actually see it. My freeze plugs were good and given the area I knew it was coming from (I could see steam) I figured 150 bucks for the gaskets would probably fix the problem. If you do it yourself, the haynes manual (do yourself a favor and buy the haynes... NOT the chiltons) tells you that you have to disconnect the A/C. This is not the case. I unbolted it and set it aside with the hoses still attached.
