Couple problems with the old man's explorer

Hey all, I'm trying to help my old man save a couple bucks and avoid taking his explorer to the dealership, I'm pretty comfortable working on cars but just need alittle direction.

To start my old man drives a 2000 v8 explorer, i was wondering what spark plugs people are running on these things and what the recommended gap is?

Another issue he has is that the "Door Open" light stays on at all times, i think its a switch/sensor of some sort but don't know where to start looking.

Along the same lines he always has to have the switch to control the interior dimmer lights all the way off, otherwise the interior lights always stay on, at least until the car gets moving and then it goes off otherwise they stay on....its alittle odd

Ohh and his rear wiper doesn't work either

Anyways I appreciate any and all help, I'm supposed to visit over the weekend and wanted to help the rents out alittle bit and have him avoid a trip to the dealer over a bunch of minor problems.

Thanks

Re: Couple problems with the old man's explorer

1) Use Motorcraft Platinum plugs only in that and really no need to gap since every one I changed were preset.

2) The door ajar switches are located in the latches. Use a good penetrating oil and spray the latches well. Now go to each door and repeatedly slam open & closed while watching the door ajar light. This may even fix it.

3) Once the door ajar problem is fixed, then you will see this issue is related.

4) If the fuse is good, most likely the rear wiper motor is shot. I changed alot of these.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Thanks, do you have a part number for the motor? is it possible something with the rear wiper is stripped? i forgot to post that he mentioned it "makes noise" but the arm just doesn't move

Re: Couple problems with the old man's explorer

I'm not sure about the explorer but some vehicles have splines on the wiper arm and some are just bolted on and may just need tightened. Also could be disconnected. As far as plug gap, it should tell you on the sticker under the hood. It doesn't hurt to just check the gap before installing (in case they were dropped or something)
