dash lights 2004 explorer

On long highway drives of an hour or more, some of my dash lights start coming on. It usually starts with the 4 x 4 high blinking followed by an assortment - maybe the ABS, service engine soon, the dogbone (meaning in limp home mode) etc. The vehicle doesn't seem to be in 4 X 4, the brakes work fine and I'm at full power. I'm retired and usually only take trips of 20-30 miles, mostly on back roads; however, it is disconcerting enough to get off the highways and meander on home. Next time in vehicle, everything is fine. I can't afford to go to a dealer who'll spend hours trying to diagnose this intermittent problem Any ideas?

Could check instrument cluster connection at rear but may be a fault in cluster itself .

Need to have codes checked. 4x4 and abs all linked. Can also turn on wrench lamp.

Re: dash lights 2004 explorer

Thanks all! I believe my son-in-law has a code reader or at least access to one. Will try that first - hope the code(s) stay in there for awhile rather than waiting until I'm on the road again. I only thought to ask now as I may have to help a friend on a 3+ hour round trip.
