I'm hoping Badgett reads this and responds. I replaced my 97 4.0L SOHC 2WD engine with a 98 4x4 SOHC engine. All kinds of codes came up when the check engine light came on. The codes were about the transmission. The Explorer engine runs fine but the O/D light blinks and the speedometer doesn't work. My guess is the computer doesn't recognize the 4x4 engine ? I had to replace the harness wires with my harness from the old 2wd engine because the 4x4 wire harness had cut wires on it. Might have spliced the wrong wire color but double checked again.

Badgett made a response on one thread about cleaning the sensors on the 4x4 transmission to the speedometer. But my tranny is a 2WD. That shouldn't have any bearing to the computer unless it needs to be reset or recalibrated.

My Ford service advisor says to check the wiring to the speed sensor and the transmission range sensor which leads to the CPU. If one is bad then it'll set all kinds of codes on the transmission. The speed sensor will set the ABS light on which probably is the source of the problem. Keeping my fingers crossed on this. I'm hoping one of the wires to the harness was missed wired incorrectly. Otherwise I'll change the sensor and find out why.
