FD EXPL 1999 - Short circuit when key turns

One morning, I went to start my '99 FD Explorer - all electric was dead to the car - no power locks, clock, etc. 6 mos old battery. I jiggled the positive wire on the battery, it "re-connected" and everything worked, locks, clock, radio, etc. I turned the ignition, it short circuited the battery. I jiggled the positive wire, "re-connected", etc. Turned the ignition, short circuit. I've never had anything remotely close to this problem before. Can anyone help?!

Jiggling the wire is not fixing anything. Clean and tight connections are essential. Battery > solenoid > starter.
