Front ABS Sensor - why so expensive?

I have a 97 4wd XLT with the ABS light on.

A buddy at a garage put a meter on it and found L front Speed sensor bad.

Napa can get the rear sensor for $15 but the front sensor that looks very similar is a dealer-only item for $160 - not a typo!!

It is a Motorcraft BRAB 115.

Carquest can get me a hub with sensor for $120 - but not just the sensor.

Anybody know of alternatives?
Thanks

Bill

Re: Front ABS Sensor - why so expensive?

The wheel speed sensor is not replacable by itself.... it comes as part of a sealed hub/bearing/sensor unit.

Re: Front ABS Sensor - why so expensive?

Sure it is replaceable!

The first thing I did was take it out to inspect it for metal shavings & cable damage - it took me 10 minutes to get it off.
Motorcraft sell the sensor as the BRAB 115 - without the hub.

I can get an aftermarket hub with a sensor and I can get aftermarket sensors ( for $15) - but only the similar looking rear sensor.
