How many miles?

Im planning on buying a 2002 Explorer that has 101k miles on it. I was just wondering how many more miles out of the truck I could expect? Like a round about number. How many miles on an explorer have you ever seen that runs?

Re: How many miles?

Good luck! The most mileage I have seen on a 2002-2004 Explorer is 90,000 miles run through our dealership.

The 2002-2004 Explorer is riddled with transmission and rear axle issues along with wheel bearings and seal leaks.

Sorry about your bubble I just bursted, but those are the facts.

Don't get me wrong. There are probably alot of them out there with higher miles. I just never seen one yet.

Re: How many miles?

The 2002's are built a little worse then some of the late 90's, but I have heard of Eddie Bauer versions that get upwards of 300k. I saw one myself, for a really good price, but I didnt want something with that many miles.

You could expect to get about 110 to 120k miles before having to fix the automatic problems that almost every car has. IE: AC and Transmission.

Other problems might be that your enigine is simply overused and can just destroy itself. Take the car out or to a trusty mechanic if you are not one to see how well those things are. If the AC runs cold and it shifts gears/from reverse well then it may be a good deal.

Re: How many miles?

We gave our '97 Explorer to our daughter a couple years ago when she finished college.... it had 140,000 on it then, and it's pushing 170,000 now.

But..... it was the 4 liter pushrod motor, not the overhead cam, and it had a manual trans.

I replaced the clutch disc when we gave it to her. As long as I had it open, I put in a reman pressure plate and a new slave cylinder.

We are referring to 2002-2004 4 door Explorers and the reliability of them.

My point was that maybe he should look at some other year/engine/trans if the 2002 is as problem-ridden as it appears.
