My '99 Taurus has had this problem for two years. Only solution is to replace the head unit. There's a circuit board in behind the face plate that's the culprit. I find if I push hard enough on the face plate the display will reappear for a few miles at least. I generally just listed to the same 6 CD's over the course of a month, so it doesn't really bother me anymore.
