Oil & Gas Ques. on 95 Explorer

I have a 1995 Ford Explorer XLT, 4x4, Control Trac. It has 156,000 miles on it and thus far no major problems or repairs. I bought it with 86,000 miles on it and have used only Mobil 1 Drive Clean 10w30(now called Mobil 1 5000) and Bosch Oil Filters. My question is with the mileage it now has on it should I switch over to 10w40 permanently or just for the winter time, or should I just stick with 10w30 all together. I've used nothing but the 10w30 since I bought it. Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated.

For my gas question. I've heard it's a good idea to run a higher octane in the winter time, such as 89. I usually run 87 all year and maybe once a month if that run 89. Any difference in running 89 or higher in the winter time vs 87?

Thanks.

Re: Oil & Gas Ques. on 95 Explorer

The gas you run will not really make much differance. The PCM controls that.

As far as the oil goes, I suggest 10W40 on an older engine with high miles. It will not hurt it at all. Actually, I run 15W40 in both of my older vehicles year round.
