Hey everyone, i just joined this forums and i find it very informative.

I just bought a (new to me) 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. And I would like to know what types of problems are common in this vehicle, or what problems you've experienced with it. If you havent had any major problems let me know what you like about it.

My 2002 mountaineer has 54,000 miles on it, it is a v8 with the 4.6 engine. I am liking it very much, it drives a lot better than what I used to have before, however I am averaging about 14 mpg in city miles. Is this about average for this mountaineer? The mpg arent really a problem because I'm used to that. Anywho, the only thing that doesn't have me very happy is the acceleration on the vehicle. I don't think it accelerates as nicely as it should, like it feels like it should have more power than it does. Does anyone else feel the same way about their mountaineer?

Man, i take it no one owns a mountaineer around here. Well if anyone feels like starting this part of the forum back up, feel free to reply. This forum's pretty much dead.

Common problems.................................

Rear wheel bearing noise.
Rear axle seal leaks.
Harsh transmission reverse engagements.
Front bearing noise/ABS problems.
Rear ABS sensor fails.

Other than that, They are pretty good. The 4.6L is the best engine to get, but does seem weak.

I don't know about the Mountaineers but the Explorers have a door lock issue.... Maybe Mulletman can shed some light on it??

Oh and ours crapped out a wheel bearing at 26,000 miles <- street miles.

Lock actuators have been a problem on ALL Ford models, so I did not include that.

Oh! Mountaineer steering wheels have a paint issue, but it is a cosmetic issue.

Mullet man, you mentioned that the 4.6 engine is the best to get. That sounds great! But why is it that you think it's the best. I am no car expert so I really don't know and i've been wondering about that.

The 4.6 has way more power than the 4.0 and it also gets better fuel mileage.
