Overheating question..........

hello everyone, my name is Joe. I am new to this site, so I just wanted to intoduce myself first. My question is this. For quite some time now, my exp. (2000 xls) seems to be overheating, or is it? The temp needle usually goes to the highest point (past the H) and check gauge comes on. Now, when this happens, if the a.c. is on, the air gets warm (disgustingly). It will stay like that for a lil bit then go back down, check gauge light goes out. The upper radiator hose does get hot, so i would think that the thermostat is operating properly. The one thing that i did notice, and i dont know if it is normal, but when i start the truck, the fan comes on and stays on. Even when the truck sits overnight, ya drive it for a bit and the gauge goes to H and light comes on. Im thinking bad gauge maybe? The serp belt has little cracks in it, can that be it? I was just hoping someone might have had the same problem to shed some light on this for me, dont want to take it to a garage and have them try and fix something that isnt right and say, OH lets try this.............sorry for the long description, thnx guys and gals.................
