I am shopping for a 2002 Explorer XLT and my salesman has the right color combination and options that I want, except... it has running boards. I hate running boards! If I still purchase the vehicle, can I replace them myself (I'm technically skilled) with the tubular steps bars? What all is involved (ie cutting, drilling, etc.)?
They were available as a dealer-installed accessory as well so I don't think taking them off should be a big deal. My old Ranger had step bars but they were mostly useful for getting my pants dirty in the winter so I puposely got a Sport Trac without them. The wife bitches about climbing in though.
