Changing the instrument cluster requires programmable module from the dealer.

Explorers from 1996-2001 have interchangeable parts.

Re:interchangeability on explorers

OK Mr. Mullet, I was told on another forum that since I don't have a digital odometer/tripmeter They are mechanical that I could just swap the cluster out. My problem is that I may have broken the trip meter/odometer gear by trying to reset it while in motion. However I have noticed that they work occasionally. What say you??
(The speedometer and other gauges work fine)
Thanks a bunch I really appreciate your advice.

Re: sinterchangeability on explorers

Well, since it is not digital, then you can swap it out from a similar vehicle. I don't think you can fix the trip odometer unless you tear it apart. It's broke anyway right?

Re: sinterchangeability on explorers

You are so right. I have an instrument cluster on the way. It just seems to me that it's easiest to change the whole cluster than to muck around and try to repair the one that I have since I would have to remove the cluster in either case. Of course I am assuming that the replacement is functional, as I have been assured that it is. The price is almost the same either way. Do you happen to know if it's a difficult process to increase the mileage on the odometer?? the one that is on the way doesn't have as many miles indicated as the one in my truck.

Re: sinterchangeability on explorers

I think altering the mileage in anyway is illegal.

Re: sinterchangeability on explorers

You are almost correct. The key word in the law is intent. I have no intent to defraud anyone. All I want to do is to bring the mileage reading back to where it should be. The option is to not fix it and then the mileage would reflect only what's on the odometer at the present, and if I change it out, the mileage will be higher than the actual amount.
