i have a 93 explorer. sometimes when i start it there is a whining and or squeeling sounds that are coming from the front of the engine. could this be something with the alternator or with a belt or somthing? it goes away usually after the vehicle has warmed up or if i accellerate. any ideas?
It could be a bearing in the alternator starting to go... it could also be the bearing in the tensioner, the water pump, the power steering pump..... anything that's driven by the belt.
Open the hood, start the engine, and go to the front of the car and see if you can tell where it's comong from. Otherwise, pull the belt and check each unit by hand... feel for radial play or a "grinding" feeling when they're turned by hand.
