Exclamation Temperature Guage shooting to ~~HOT~~ / Maintenance Manual?

After I drive a few miles, the temp gauge zooms to WAY HOT and I get a message in the display screen on the dash. I know to crank the heat when that happens, so I did. As soon as the heat starts up, the temp gauge immediately drops to normal levels. But I don't know what's causing it. Is it just a thermostat? Someone told me this SUV may have (2) termostats? Is that true?

If it's just a termostat, can I change it/them myself? I have a very good working knowledge of autos/trucks and a decent set of tools.

1) Is is just a termostat?
If so, can I do it myself?

2) Where can I find a very good maintenance manual for this SUV? I remember the Chiltons manuals from years ago. Is that the thing to get?

much thanks!

Sounds like a thermostat. I'd recommend taking it to a garage and having the cooling system flushed out and new hoses.

I'm such a duff. I checked the fluid level and it was nearly a gallon low. I filled and will see if issue remains. What a assbag I am.

The only thing I can think of similar I had happen was when I would start the truck up I had to give it gas to keep it running or it would shake and shut off. I replaced the Idol Air Control Valve and fixed that issue.
