upper ball joint help...

I've been hearing a popping sort of sound from the front end. I assumed it was bad shocks, so i replaced the driver's side (was shot).

But I still hear it. I hopped under it again and noticed the upper ball joint boot was torn. I pumped it full of lube for now to make sure it has SOME grease in it.

Question is, how hard is it to replace? I see autozone and such have the joint and arm assembly for about $60.

Will i need an alignment for this?

2000 explorer xlt, 2wd, 96k miles.

anyone give some pointers? I'm pretty good mechanically, just new to ford expl.
