Looking at a tranny project again. 2003 4X4 with a bad tranny. What transmission is in the V6 and what is in the V8. I'm not sure which engine is in it yet just looking for an idea on a rebuild price.

My next project is looking to be a 2002 Explorer with 123,000 miles for $2,000. I found a place that rebuilds this tranny for $950 with a 2 day turn around. I just completed a tranny swap in a 96 V8 and the intake gasket needed repair at the same time. I accessed the top bolts in the bell housing from the top. From what I can see it is a major challenge to get at these with the top of the motor together. Any tips to get the top 4 out the top 2-3 for sure?

I use a 3 ft. extension and a swivel socket.

From underneath laying on a creeper or from a hoist? I can see it from a hoist but from a creeper it's awful tough.

With working on purchasing my next fixer a 2003 Explorer it sounds like my choice is one needs a tranny the other needs a motor. They both have 180,000miles the one that has a bad tranny has a used engine with 70,000 miles on it put in professionally a year ago. They got it stuck in snow bank and seemed to fry the tranny. She towed it with a chain to the shop and was told she could have done something to the tranny when doing so. The one with a bad motor is a 2004 timing belt issue and bent valves. My question is do I buy the motor V-6 project that I found a used engine out of a rolled 2004 sport track for $800 and the rig for $1800 or do I buy the 2002 seven passenger for $2000 and put the tranny in for $950? They are both nice clean non rusty rigs.
