confused will not go over 3000rpm

I have 2004 ford sport trac that I just purchased & the eng sound very good it has 43000 miles. the problem is that it has no power & when you have it on park or neutral the rpm will not go over 3000rpm. there is no code or eng ligth on. I put the scanner just in case & it comes out clean no code it drives but with no power . any ideas of what going on thanks .

when you try to rev it in neutral, are you flooring it or increasing the throttle gradually?

Re: will not go over 3000rpm

both when in neutral, or gradually, & also when in gear it does not go over 3000rpm, i disconected the t.p.s. & also the afm and theres no change in the eng. it stays running so i dont know im disconecting the cat to see if its clogged.

I have a 2001 model doing the same thing only in park and neutral--if it is doing it while in gear, it's not enough for me to notice--wondering what you came up with. Thanks!

Re: will not go over 3000rpm

i have not been able to fix it. it does the pinging when it reaches the 3000rpm mark. it pings like is low in octane, like it lost the timing. I have not come up with anything yet they even sugested for me to disconect the cat to see if its clogged.

its a rev limiter so you wont blow your motor to hell. You can take it off with a programer. But its there for a reason and its a good thing.

Re: will not go over 3000rpm

Mine WILL rev over 3,000 RPM's - it just starts coughing at 85 mph and shuts down at about 90 mph. I found that out the first time I got mad at an old woman doing 25 mph on the highway and passed her. 6,000 RPM's when it downshifted, in nothing flat! Probably a good thing it shuts down at 90 mph, too, since it gets a bit squirrelly at that speed!

That rev limiter freaked me out the 1st time I tried to rev it up - thought it was puking.
