1993 Ford Taurus SHO

Hello people,
I own a 1993 Ford Taurus SHO and have been driving it regularly. The other day i was driving it and the engine light went on, and i pulled over to see what it was and there was this heavy black smoke coming from my muffler. In addition my muffler, the insides of the tips are litterally smoked black in color, it's like a layer of soot/ash... Any ideas on what i might be? I noticed my car also has lost a good amount of acceleration since the incident.. Thanks for you time guys

O2 sensor maybe....
Have you checked for Trouble Codes? If one is set it could lead you to the problem.

Are the plugs oily or sooty?

It should not a vacuum leak as the black smoke is a sign of a rich condition.

You could have fouled your cat if this has been going for any extended period of time.

I suppose it is possible for an injector to have failed in a partially open conditon (small piece of grit lodged in it?). Another source is a very dirty air filter but that would not explain the dark smoke.
