88 3.8 Cougar

I'm wrapping up a head gasket replacement on my Cougar, and my manual mentions a thrust button for the cam. When I broke the engine down, there was none, I do not remember one, there isn't one in the dissassembly pictures I took, and I can't find one in the garage any where. Is it possible my engine just didn't have one? If so should I put one in?

The main reason I'm asking here is because the 88 3.8 is different than previous models, and is set up more like the 5.0 from what I've heard others explain. It could just be my manual is being general, and not covering something that specific, so hopefully someone here has experience with this.
