99 mustang V6 Squeals when first starting - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

Recently my car has been squealing when I first start it up in the morning it last for about 5 seconds. I used that belt greaser and it went away for a day but then it just came back. I replaced the belt yesterday 9/17/03 and this morning it squeaked again. It does not squeak when I give it gas or turn on the AC its just when I first start it in the morning. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Could be a couple of things.

Wrong size belt
belt slippage ( yes even on new belts )
Starter if it only lasts for a few seconds after starting
idler pulley - bearing could be shot

I know that the stuff that they market to make the squeels go away is generally useless. It'll make a mess out of your engine compartment as well.

Does it just have the 1 belt or are there others that may be causing the problem.
If it has a multigroove belt then check it is aligned properly in the grooves.

My stang is sqealing too, usually when i turn out of my drive way in the morning

My 97 GT has a similar problem, I can't guess if yours is the same. Mine is coming from the belt but I heard that changing the belt does not solve the problem, you hear the same noise after a while. I got a recommendation not to change at all. I am trying to live with it although it is very disturbing.

Thanx Lunatic, your probably right since it does it mostly when the wheel is turned all the way either left or right and im slowly going around a big turn. I'll look into that this weekend

Check the tensioner belt pulley. Looking through the board I've seen three 1999 V-6's mentioning the same noise problem.

The noise could be because the tensioner pulley is running out of lube (no, it can't be added) which in turn is causing the pulley to spin on the centering boss which the pulley slips over (on the end of the alloy tensioning arm arm). When the pulley's center hub spins it wears away the material from the hub meant to center the pulley on the tensioning arm.

In other words your tensioning arm/pulley assembly are in the process of dying. About $125 wholesell from Ford. Think twice before buying one from a salvage yard as it too has been worn and you have no idea how long it will last.
