Question Electrical Woes

The wife has a 2002 eSCAPE WITH ABOUT 42,000 MILES. About a week ago, she said the battery light on the left side of the cluster stays on for a while, & comes on at different times. I checked battery voltage after a cold start, & the light didn't go out as it should, (even when RPM's increased). It was about 13.8 volts. I turned the lights, heater, wipers, etc on, but voltage didn't drop as if the alternator wasn't keeping up. Now I'm puzzled. The belt is tight, with no slippage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.usersuper1@msn.com
