The engine temperature reading on my 1998 Explorer V6 4L is very erratic. From cold it almost reaches the point of overheating then it drops down to normal. After that the temp reading moves up and down the middle section of the gauge. Any ideas as to the problem?

Could it be a dodgy thermostat?

This happened on my XF,.. it was ticking with the indicators hahaha, turned out the neg- had come off the engine block so check your neg- earths.

then replace your temp sensor if it still happens.
