ford mondeo

hi i just bought a ford mondeo lxi 97 model its got 16" mags and thats about it i was wondering if there are a few things i can do to it to get a little more out of the engine that isent going to cost me an arm and a leg to get done i have currently cool air induction put on i have a 3" pipe running down to the front of the car with a K&N air filter por on the end i had massive improvements straight away. also in the long run i am thinking of turboing it just wanted to know if the components in the engine are strong enough and at what PSI i would run thanks

Re: ford mondeo

I believe the engine this Mondeo would have is the 2.0L Zetec four cylinder. There are extensive turbo kits available for this engine, most notably for the Ford Focus. Without changing internals, you wouldn't be running more than 6-8 psi for reliabilities sake.

You've really done all you all you can without spending heaps, if you can afford it, a full exhaust will improve airflow. By the way, not sure if you aware (or care), but pod filters are illegal in NSW, bear that in mind if you get pulled over.

And under drive pulley kit is also a cheap mod that you can try as well.

Tim!

Re: ford mondeo

yeah thanks tim the pods are illegal if they are not engeneered while mine aint but we asked a cop and he said as long as it was engeneered it should be ok also would you know where i would go to purchase the turbo kit and is there a masive boost in power also i have asked a few exhaust mechanics around here they say its already running virtual extractors and a 7 7/8 exhaust and that if i ran 2" and proper extractors there would probably only be about 8% improvement and that i wouldnt notice

Re: ford mondeo

Ok, well...

For starters, I assume you mean a 1 and 7/8 inch exhaust, which is pretty standard gear for the Zetec engine. I can assure you the standard exhaust manifold and catalytic converter are hunks of crap, they were on my Mondeo and they are on my Focus as well (same engine). Extractors with a high flow cat and a nice 2 or 2 and 1/4 inch exhaust would be a nice improvement in power, but you certainly are looking at well over 500 bucks for the setup, look more towards a grand.

And you would definitely notice the improvement, it may not shave ten seconds off your quarter mile time, but you will definitely notice it. The Zetec engine typically runs rather restrictive exhausts, so it's something I wouldn't forget. Assuming it has the standard exhaust on it, but if you really want power, then I'd be hunting for some there.

However, if you decide to go a turbo kit, you'll be replacing the whole exhaust anyway so it's rather inconsequential.

I guess you'd really need to do some homework on a turbo kit if you want one, there are so many levels of performance you can look at, depending on boost pressure, and how far you want to go in replacing standard internal parts. You're realistically looking at 7 to 10 grand for a nice setup running mid levels of pressure with an intercooler and all, so it's a considerable whack of cash.

Infocus Motorsport are currently developing a turbo setup for the Focus (which, again, shares the same engine), but just look to your major tuners in Sydney for kits. You really need to consider how much cash you want to blow, how much power you want to acheive, and if you're prepared for the possible dramas associated with running a forced induction car.

Hope that gives you a small heads up.

Cheers... Tim
