Go and get this from the wreakers:
TE/TF 6 cyl springs (better of getting new lowered ones and new shockers) new lowered with shockers would be $400
TE/TF front discs. $40
New engine mounts (for a 6cyl) $53
6cyl crossmember $40
6cyl radiator $80 second hand or about $200 new
Full XF EFI motor (from a Fairmont or something) with the looms and ECU Should cost no more that $700 for the entire thing.
1 4 speed falcon manual (preferably out of a 6cyl cortina as the gearbox extention housing is differant) about $300 (could go the xf 5 speed and they rock but are hard to find and cost $$$)
6cyl diff core (falcon S manual would be best) $120
6cyl cortina drive shaft $60
put it all together any you'll have a beasty able to wipe the smiles of quite a few more modern cars.
Reason for the XF EFI motor: the eb motors may go in but I don't know but I do know the XF ones will fit with out a worry.
A carbie XF motor is no good as the xf fuel pump sits under the engine mount and will not fit if you use the cortina engine mounts (and you have to)
This would double your power and make it handle really well to.
The 2lt OHC 4cyl motors do rock and you can get excellent power out of them (as LowerED did with his rocket escort) but in heavier cortina body you need a little more torque.
This is only if the body is straight as though.
If it's a bit of a junker than piss it off and get a nice manual EA S with the cash instead.
Breathe! It's only the internet....
Replacement cam, extractors, rejet of carby or replacement carby, piss the shit house points setup and fit aftermarket electronic ignition.
Cam is a pain as head has to be removed as cam is fitted from the rear, then all your budget blows out the window as if you got it that far you are best to reco the head, and you get carried away and port it, blah blah
Cheapest thing extractors, rejet, better aircleaner etc dont think there is any free magic out there for them.
Better still fit a 302 windsor, probably better handling than a six and easy power.
If you fit a cam to that engine replace the springs with some better quality ones that can take better lift and don't get caried away with specs there either keep very mild. With heavy body, auto you are realy up against it. A four speed [or steel case Toyota 5 speed] Check to see if X.F Webber carb fits easy ? When we had leaded fuel, these engines really went well with high compression 11 to 1, twin 45mm side droughts, extractors 4 into one 2 1/2 exh with mild cam and good springs otherwise the rockers cut through the cam lobes..Trouble is most this stuff is either not applicable now or illegal.
In some ways a good Jap six would be a better conversion. Say a Toyota Soarer / Creseda etc..Gearing would be about right..Add all the Cortina six suspention in the front. You'd have economy and save some weight over the front wheels. Need engineering though...
