Loud knocking in 94' Thunderbird

My son has a 1994 Thunderbird that slowed and made a high pitch noise while driving. I had to go get him. Later, we went back once it cooled down, put about 20oz of water into the radiator and he drove it back home, no problem. He now started it and it has a loud knocking to it. Does this sound like a thrown rod? It was down for about 2 years and he put it in the shop and they said it was head gaskets. They replaced those then. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! TIA

If I had to guess, I'd say that he overheated the engine to the point that it seized. The loud knocking it probably a spun rod bearing. This is especially true if the engine is the 3.8L V6. In either case, you're better off replacing the engine.
