I recently purchased a 96 Ford F350 with the 7.3 liter diesel engine. Right now the fuel economy is rather poor and I'm not sure where to start to determine the cause.

The engine doesn't miss or smoke, starts easily and runs smooth. The air filter appears clean and the indicator for airflow doesn't show any problems.

What are the usual things to look for with this engine to improve economy?

There are alot of question to ask when it truly comes to fuel economy and expectations. What kind of fuel mileage are you getting,what are you expecting to get,is it a dually? rear end ratio? 4x4?,bug deflector? running boards? sun visor? all of these add-on can affect mileage.Then the quality of fuel you buy,how you drive,there are alot of variables that come into play when it comes to fuel mileage.
Make sure air filter,fuel filter and oil are are all good,as oil also can affect mileage if it has alot of miles on it.How may miles on the engine?

I would say that most mileages I've checked average between 10 and 18 mpg.Alot depends on the truck ( how its rigged out,and the driver,how the truck is driven). Thats I guess about the best way I know how to sum up the never ending sag over fuel economy.......
