Sounds like oil is burning out of exhaust, could be to much pressure in the cyclinders,1 was the head machined,2 could be valve guides incorrectly replaced,3 headgasket.

if it ran ok before the cambelt broke then the first thing i would do is get the pump and cam timing checked

Ouch! Your cambelt broke?
According to my mechanic that's usually 'throw the engine away' time...

I have had my cam belt and timing belt replaced only to discover the guy that owned the car and had the belt done previously- 1. didn't 'Loctite' the nut on the timing cogs 2. removed the timing cogs (duh what do you think the tensioners are for?) 3. in doing that lovely little botch job he has allowed the steel roll pin to shear, thus the cogs fell out of alignment putting the engine out!!

I have now replaced the timing belt, cam belt, cogs and will now need to do the oil seal as well because of this jerk off! After doing all of that my timing is STILL out!

I had even pinned piston one, wound the engine round, re-timed the camshaft and the crankshaft, then pinned up the fuel pump and it STILL ran like a bag of you know what!

I have conceeded finally and taken it into my Ford garage because they have some diesel specialists - I could only wish them luck!!

Adam.
