Hi folks,

wonder if anyone can help or has had a similar problem. I have a 1998 escort TD 1.8. She runs quite lumpy most of the time and is a little slow to respond when accelerating. She is quite smokey (more than deisels usually are) but this differs from day to day. In addition in cold whether she can tick over quite a few times prior to starting. I have had a number of garages look at it, had the relays and glows checked - all fine and had the fuel filter head replaced as this was an intitial suspect. All have been unsuccessful.

I managed to find others with the problems similar to mine on the net and it has been suggested that the culprit is a faulty timing advance solenoid.

What i'd like to know is:

Is this diangnosis likely to be correct?

How easy it it to replace and how much will it hit me for!!!!

Any help would help me out a treat.
