frown ford fiesta - misfiring, now all the time

hi, ive now got a new problem with my diesel fiesta now.

when its cold, as in after ive left it overnight when i start it up in the morning, down to about 5c, so its not as if its gone below freezing.

1. its a pig to start, sometimes it will start, fire a couple of times then die, yet other times it will start fine!

2.why is it that i have to press down the clutch pedal to aid in the starting of it?, with the clutch pedel not depressed it sounds like its "draging", i never had to do that when i had my petrol engined car.

3.if i just let it tick over, it sounds like its misfiring & its also making a "pinking" noise & has got rough idling?

when it gets warm it fine, anyone got any ideas??

Re: ford fiesta - misfiring when cold

With the starting, I'd simply get your battery checked first, odds are its a little flaky and struggling in the mornings... (probably wouldn't hurt to check alternator as well).
The idle could also be battery related, although fairly unlikely. Unfortunately I have nfi when it comes to diesels.

A diesel festiva must be bloody fuel efficient though !

Re: ford fiesta - misfiring when cold

ive changed the battery, about 4 weeks now, so far so good. the previus one was leaking acid & wasnt up to the job of starting a diesel.
what do you mean by "check alternator"?, do you mean by putting a multimeter on the termials of the battery to check that its putting charge back in? or something else?

oh, and yes it is very good on fuel, i get about 430miles to 30.00 GBP.

Does it have glow plugs? could be a failed glow plug. Also a leaking injector is a possibility. Too hard to tell we don't have them in Australia in diesel form.

yes it does have glow plugs. is it possiable that a new glow plug could be faulty?, these were all replaced about 6 weeks ago.
what about the bar that joins them all together could this be faulty as well?

Re: ford fiesta - misfiring when cold

To test glowplugs, disconect the glowplug bus cable from all plugs and put a ohm meter lead from the terminal of the plug and the other lead to earth on the side of the plug for each plug.

The resistance should be about 0.5 ohm, be sure to test the resistance of the meters leads first by contacting them together and noting the reading, this must be subtracted from the reading of the plugs for a true value

biggrin Ford fiesta - misfiring, it now happens all the time

yes it's me again.

ive now got this problem all the time now, these are the symptoms:

1. i can somethimes smell diesel inside the car with the engine running. ive checked the exhaust for leaks - none found.

2. ive been told that it misfiring possiably because one of my injecters has worn out or is beyond its useful life. how do i tell if its worn out & in need of replacing??

3. it now smokes on acceleration, quite a bit when its cold, but it gets less as the engine warms up, could this be related to item number 2?

4. ive had the diesel leaked fixed, it was leaking from the throtle shaft seal.

5. its now running on so called "cleaner diesel", but it was misfiring before the change.

6. ive tried changing garages, no diference to misfiring or the smoke.

any ideas before i start shelling out money on parts that i might not need?
