08 Escape mileage...."Break-in Period"?

I purchased an '08 Escape XLT, FWD 3.0L V6 today. It used to be said that a new vehicle's gas mileage increases as the auto is driven for a given amount of miles and becomes "broken in". Is that a realistic expectation? If so, what is the target mileage? Thanks, LMB

Re: 08 Escape mileage...."Break-in Period"?

Target mileage is the EPA estimated mileage. However, your mileage will vary of course!

An engine is broken in generally after the first oil change (3000miles). That gives the engine sufficient time for the piston rings to seat properly. You won't see much of a mileage increase (if any) after that time period. Not every engine produced off the same factory line will get the exact mileage. EPA rates your FWD V6 Escape at 18mpg city and 24mpg highway. I would bet once the weather warms up you'll get between 20-22mpg overall driving economy.

If you want slightly better mileage and longer engine life, change to synthetic oil for your second oil change. Nothing tops it. I run Amsoil in all my vehicles and they all test beautifully (compression and such). No problems even with higher miles. Besides, your 3.0L Duratec, and your wallet will thank you down the road.
