Hey guys, i was taking my moms escape to pick up my sisters from the airport :( annnd it died. so i know from previous experience the car was running rough, when you first started it it would hit about 1000 rpm, then drop to a few hundred..almost stall then jet back up.. but it ran. now i started it and threw it in reverse and it immediately died, it only stays running when i am accelerating in neutral or any of the gears. i was thinking alternator at first but the weird random revving at start up has be confused. the lights stay on etc but when i go to start it now it takes a few extra cranks to get it to turn over before it eventually dies.. any ideas?? thanks!!

Could check idle air control valve and the mass air flow sensor.

I would clean the IAC valve (Idle Air Control). They're known to get clogged & cause idling issues. If cleaning improves the idle or solves the problem, get a Motorcraft replacement. The aftermarket units may not last more than a year. The Ford IAC for my 2002 2.0L I4 was made in Japan. Be sure to install a new gasket.

I have an '04 Escape 5 sp. with the 2L 4 cyl. engine and 330M miles. The past few months the engine has been dying occasionally when I push in the clutch and the engine goes to idle. It also dies occasionally when I take the car out of gear w/o pushing in the clutch and going to idle (I do this to try and save the throwout bearing). In the old days the deceleration valve might be bad (I don't think cars have these anymore).
Do you think this is the same problem as the one the poster mentioned with regard to the IAC valve? How does one clean the valve?

This shows you how on a 2006 2.3 . Try cleaning I.A.C valve first , simple job .

Thank you for the video. It looks very straightforward, and makes sense that the IAC valve should be cleaned like the throttle body butterfly because of fuel vapor residuals. I've ordered the new gasket, and after cleaning thge valve hopefully this will take care of the problem.

I had a very similar problem on another car I have. My thoughts initially went to the mass airflow sensor. I replaced it and the problem still occured. I finally had to submit and take it in to the dealer. I described all of the problems and left it at the dealer. I got a call back a while later. The problem was "bad gas" I didn't believe it.
As I thought back I did go to a random gas station when i was in a pinch. The problem was solved. The dealer cleaned out the gas tank, filters, lines, and injectors.
