2003 Escape - throttle is jumpy from a stop

My '03 V6 with 105K miles runs great except that the throttle isn't smooth taking off from a standing stop. The pedal requires a bit too much pressure to get going smoothly, so it accelerates suddenly instead of smoothly. This is a big gas waster.
(BTW - it's possible to take-off smoothly and slowly, but only if I use a LOT of care and concentration - something is definitely wrong with the throttle.)

Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks

Re: 2003 Escape - throttle is jumpy from a stop

Thanks R.S. I'll check on the recalls (I've only had this vehicle for about a year).

But what I'm experiencing isn't what I'd call a 'sticking gas pedal.' That condition implies a throttle that fails to return to idle when you release pressure on the pedal.
My situation is almost opposite - taking too much pressure to get the pedal to depress, resulting in a sudden surge of power when it gives way. Sorta like the throttle return spring is too heavy. Think Unintended Jackrabbit Starts.

I'm usually very smooth on the gas pedal so this is a weird feeling for me and costly at the pump.
