my wifes 2004 fwd escape is killing me. there's a clunk noise in the front end when you hit bumps/potholes etc. I immediately thought strut mounts/bearings, and replaced them. while i was reinstalling the struts, i checked out tie rods, ball joints, and sway <NOBR style="COLOR: darkgreen; FONT-SIZE: 100%; FONT-WEIGHT: normal" id=itxt_nobr_0_0>bar</NOBR> links. all are tight and intact. Can anyone offer any help in finding this problem? I'm at the end of my rope with this thing!

Been awhile since this has been posted hope you found out the issue ubt if not check the motor mounts. mine is a 2001 and that was my problem had one i replaced so far and tighted the others and no more clunking. Mine made the sound on my 1/2 mile dirt driveway so lots of potholes to hit on that so know the driving nuts feeling!
Front wheel drive cars/trucks are notorious for wearing out tie rod ends, especially outers. I know you said you checked this, but it might be worth replacing them if there are substantial miles on the car. They're cheap and it's an easy do-it-yourself.
