2004 Escape Fuel

I have a 2004 Escape Limited and was wondering where the fuel tank on this vehicle is located ?

The reason I ask is that I am beginning to get the smell of petrol/gas in the cabin, and I want to check out the tank to make sure it hasn't been ruptured or punctured.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on what to check or do in this situation ?
It seems to be progressively getting stronger...

James

You can access the top of the tank through the rear seats. Under the driver side rear seat is the access for the fuel pump. Can you see fuel dripping as it runs? Is there a check engine light on?

Re: 2004 Escape Fuel

Johnny, bearing in mind I am in Australia, does this mean for us the tank would be on the passengers side ? (our drivers seat is on the right side)

Before I start lifting carpet and taking out seat bolts, I want to make sure I've got the correct side.

Re: 2004 Escape Fuel

I had the same problem with a fuel smell in my 2003 Escape and it was caused by a fault fuel pump gasket. See if you can see fuel coming out the top of the tank or take it to your local dealer and have them perform a smoke test to find the leak. Also, check the obvious for the gas cap.
