2005 Escape knocking noise
Hey guys. Have a 2005 Escape 4 cyl that recently started making a knocking noise. Its not very loud but has me concerned. Its the same at idle and in gear and doesn't seem to increase on acceleration. Runs fine and no stuttering.

Here is a video of the sound.

Thanks for your help!

Are you sure that doesn't change with acceleration?

The link won't work for me. This is going to sound dumb but I've changed many intake manifolds on the focus, escape, and fusion 4 cyl. The intake manifold runner control will make a knocking noise. Sounds like a rod knock. Use a stethoscope to listen to the motor. Motor will be quiet and intake it will be very clear.

Re: 2005 Escape knocking noise
If you hear a "Knocking" or "detonation" it is a term used to describe a situation where the timing of the cams on your Ford's engine are off. Usually, this is caused by a belt or chain that has slipped or has damaged teeth. Listen for what sounds like the marbles rolling around in a can of spray paint when you are shaking it up. Your 4 cylinder engine may also simply make a "pinging" sound if there is detonation or piston slap (the pistons are slapping against the side of the cylinder walls usually caused by detonation problems). If you notice this sound coming from your engine, you may need a timing belt adjustment or replacement. You'll need to take this to your mechanic to have the problem corrected.

Wouldn't do any harm to change engine oil and filter , especially if not been done for a while and see if it helps .Also check crankshaft pulley first .

Re: 2005 Escape knocking noise
Thank you guys so much for the feedback. I've worked on cars before but kind of a newby to a lot things.
What I did do was tested r-clar's suggestion. I took a screwdriver and listened to the engine which was pretty quiet and steady. I then put it to the intake manifold (sitting in front of engine of 4 cyl) and it was pretty noisy.
So if this is the problem, does the whole intake need replacing or just the runner control?

She is due for a oil change and new spark plugs this week too.

It's usually the bushings inside the manifold. Never seen replacement ones. New intake is what we do at work.
