I am getting ready to change the Tranny fluid in my 2005 Mercury Mariner. I have heard conflicting reports. Can anyone comment on what type of transmission filter is present? I have heard the filter is internal and can only be replace with a rebuild.

Hmmm. I can't find a specific filter for either the 2.3 or 3.0 engine. I can't say if I've ever heard of a filter being 'internal'. I know Ford is starting to offer 'lifetime' filters on their newer vehicles, from the air filter and in a few years...probly an oil filter!

Still, if no one else here can give you a solid answer you can always contact TWO dealerships close to you. If they both give you the same answer then at least you'll be certain as to the answer.

I saw the mention of internal filter on Edmunds forum and actually saw a filter part for the Mariner that says "internal filter, transmission rebuild is required". The reason for my confusion is that other online parts stores list a filter but there is no mention of internal. I will call my local dealer and inquire....btw...I have Amsoil transmission fluid ready to to into the Mariner!!

I think there might also be a inline magnetic transmission filter on your vehicle.
