2008 Escape V6 XLT mpg?

We just got our 2008 V6 Escape XLT 2 days ago. We've gone through a 1/4 tank of gas already and the mpg reading says 14. At least half of the miles we've put on so far have been highway so I expect higher than that since the ratings are 17/22 or 19/24 depending on what source you read. We're in Michigan so it's cold which can affect the mileage. But should it be this low? Any other experience with the 2008 V6?

One other thing, this 2008 is used with 21,000 miles on it so it should be past the break-in period.

Re: 2008 Escape V6 XLT mpg?

Don't believe overhead computers. They're not 100% accurate. Also take into the account the time you idle the vehicle, which will drastically lower your mileage. Your right about the weather as well, the colder the air the denser it becomes meaning the vehicle will burn more fuel to compensate. If you block off the front grille with a windscreen it might help ever so slightly (it helped my GMC by about 1mpg).

Just to give you an idea here: My truck; a 5.9L V8, averages 14mpg on the highway at 70mph, and 16mpg at 60mph. Be sure you take into account the speeds your travelling at as the EPA highway cycle (old one) was at 55mph. So to get 24mpg you'll have to go no more than 55mph with just the driver. Adding passengers and cargo will make the smaller V6 work harder to achieve good mileage numbers. I hate to say it, but when I was 60lbs lighter I actually got better mileage out of my vehicles! Every 50lbs of weight will decrease mileage by .5mpg beyond a certain threshold.

Re: 2008 Escape V6 XLT mpg?

I have the same model with about 12,000, im getting 18 mpg city and about 19-20 highway. I wouldnt worry about the computer, mine chanages all the time and it isnt very accurate anyway. (But its fun to watch lol, when my mpg goes down i tend to go easy on the acceleration - so it helps with your driving technique:)
Have fun.
