Hello

I have a 2009 Escape. It does NOT have the tow package installed. It does however have the wire harness from the fuse/relay box under the hood back to the rear bumper. I have read that all I need is the three relays and a plug. I think I have found the correct relays, but my Ford dealer was not able to confirm this. Does anyone know what ones I need? I know where they go under the hood, and that they are described as tow relay left turn, tow relay right turn, and tow relay brake light. Another post here says the are Ford part number 5L3Z-14N089-AA. The Ford website kind of verifies this, but is confusing.

Also how can I tell if my Escape has a transmission cooler? I read elsewhere that ALL FWD Escapes come with a trans cooler, due to some issues they had on previous models.

Right from the paper that was in the sealed plastic bag with my relays with my '09, 8T2T-14B192-CA.

All Escapes have the coolers.

I know they all have the transmission cooler. You can add a secondary cooler in series if you are concerned about over heating the ATF, or replace the factory unit with a larger one.
I would think that a dealer could look up the part numbers for replacement relays without much difficulty. Ask for relays for the trailer towing package. If you get the factory replacements, do not install all of them if they are sealed in plastic until you verify that they will work and the rest of the harness is in place. If you do not open them, you may be able to return unopened packages. Once opened, they are yours...
Rockauto has a trailer towing harness for ~$80:

So, maybe they do not include all the wiring. Rock also has a kit to add to the factory wiring from a company named "Curt" that has a circuit board, instructions, etc. I would be surprised if all vehicles had the extra wiring.

wptski, is that to say you installed the relays yourself? Did you get them from the dealer? How much were they?

tomw, is that part number a Ford part number? I have the harness that goes from the distribution box under the hood to the bumper. What I am missing is the 4 pin connector that plugs into the harness. I don't think I need the part you reference, just the 'pigtail'. I found that at etrailer for 15 bucks.

I have the factory installed trailer package, so the day I picked up my vehicle, I found a sealed plastic bag in the rear cargo area and later installed them but have never towed anything.

I think somebody stated in another forum that they were $13/each.

You need the 4-pin round to 4-pin flat pigtail, correct?

One point that came up elsewhere is about the anti-sway trailer feature and how it's enabled. There's nothing in the manual that it's a dealer only enabled option. A pure guess on my part is that "somehow" if you have the factory harness, it gets enabled.

Look at you owner's manual on how to disable the feature and that'll tell you if you have it or not. I'd be inetrested in what you find out. I've always meant to remove the relays and see if I could disable the feature but never did but it may not make a difference anyway.

I do have a harness running from the distribution box to the rear bumper. All I need is the relay numbers. Could you check yours and give me the numbers off the top of them....should be something like 5L3T P65TD. Or is it the number you quoted, 8T2T-14B192-CA.

I can get the pigtail at etrailer for 15 bucks.......

Not sure what you mean about the anti sway feature.........I'll check the manual.

On the actual three relays.

P6STD, is that a "S" or a "5" which is on all the relays anyway.
