I had a problem with my cruise on my '99 Taurus years ago shortly after I bought it. The dealer managed to duplicate the problem, as soon as you encountered a hill it would disengage, which was very annoying. I can't remember the fix for it but I'll see if I still have the record of that visit to the dealer.
Cruise controls are vacuum operated for the most part. Dealer should be able to find a solution and check for vacuum leaks.
