I have a manual 5-speed, V6, 2-wheel drive Explorer Sport that I bought in California 119,000 miles ago. Have never had a problem and even using the original clutch. Absolutely love my car. However, I now live in Michigan and my 2wd is useless in the winter. Thinking about an 07 Escape, but the manual trans is only offered with the DURATEC 2.3L I4. My questions:
1. Do I give up the manual trans for an automatic (boring) so I can have a V6? Or go with the 4 cyl. manual? I don't race, but I'm used to passing other cars, not have them pass me.
2. I used to have an '80 4x4 Bronco. What's the "intellegent" 4x4 like? I don't want something that's going to give me problems.
3. Is there a big difference between the fwd and 4wd when all I do is street and highway driving? I plan on getting ice and snows and even though we get a lot of snow, they plow the roads quite well. I just don't want to slip n slide.
4. With my Sport I can turn around with very little room. Can I do the same with the Escape?
Sorry for all the questions, but I know little about cars, except for what I like.

1) The V-6 model has lots of power, but if you prefer a manual (and it shows you can drive one good with the miles on 'ol faithful) the 2.3L is actually peppy. It is not really that weak in my opinion. You would have to test drive one and hit a few passing zones and hills before making that decision.

2) The "Intellegent 4X4" is simply an automatic 4WD system. The vehicle will normally drive around on the front two wheels until a slip is detected and the rear axle will then automatically kick in to assist but you cannot shut it off.

3) A Fwd Escape with a manual and good tires will get you around in the winter with no problems. You will also save gas and price on the vehicle.

4) The Escape has a small turn radius, but your older Sport may be very close. Those older Sport Explorers could make a complete huey on a 2 lane road! A test drive will let you know.

In my professional opinion, you will save alot of money on a Fwd 2.3L Manual and save on fuel costs. They are also more reliable in my opinion compared to the 3.0L models. Make sure you choose one without steel wheels since they rust fast and look like crap.
