rattling noise

I have a 2007 Escape AWD. Whenever I put the car in reverse after a "cold" start it makes a loud rattling sound. The sound goes away in park or drive, and will not happen after driving the car for awhile and starting it warm. Has anyone had similar problems? I am no car expert and I am a bit worried it could be a transmission problem. I'm hoping it is just something that is loose that is causing the rattling though. Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

Where does the noise appear to come from? You could check under the hood when it's doing it. (Make sure someone is inside and holding the brake.) The engine will lean to the side and maybe a hose or something is banging against something. The engine is running at a higher RPM so it leans more cold.
