Unpredictable starting problems

Hello,

I own a 2001 Escape. I am have a problem starting it sometimes. I've taken it to the dealer and they say that they cannot find anything wrong. The last time i had it they they said they reset the computer. Today it did it again. It seems to happen after it has been running a while or when the temperature in high(engine and outside). It will turn over and act like everything is ok. Then it will not idle and just turn off. It will do this many times. I have to let it sit for a while and then it will start like there is no problems. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

mjbescape.....I had to do a double take on this one. My 2001 Ford Escape is doing almost the same thing...except the not idle and turn off part...yet. Thought I had written it because it sounds just like my problem. So far I have replaced the fuel pump, throttle position sensor, fuel filter, battery (it was time for it anyways) some type of sensor...I wanna say IAC (will verify and get back with you) and gotten a fuel injection cleaning. The 3 different shops I took it to said the same thing because they couldn't "reproduce" the problem. The most recent one that "narrowed it down to the fuel pump"..was finally able to, but the problem still persists. I'm so frustrated now I don't now what to do. I'll keep u posted.

Re: Unpredictable starting problems

I had excactly the same problem.
When the escape was warm it started ok.
Took it to a dealer,(City Ford -Arncliffe Sydney) when I arrived the enginge was warm - no problem found.
When I went to pick it up - guess what, the engine was cold and the problem was back - the service manager apologised. Took it back .
They replaced "the cold air control valve" (equivalent of a choke in carburator terms)

The Escape is sweet ever since.
