I have a 2003 Navigator (just bought) 130k miles. Steering wheel twitches side to side at high spped, worse when braking. Narrowed down to tie rod ends or steering box. Does a rack and pinion steering box have an adjsutment like a worm drive to remove play between the rack and pinion? (changing tie ord ends towday since that is relatively cheap.
There are no adjustments in the rack. Have someone turn the wheel back and forth slowly and look for any loose components. Make sure to get the toe-in adjusted if you change the tie rod ends. There are also inner tie rods that can wear too. Raise it and turn the tires back and forth to see if anythineg has play.
thanks, I changed the outer tie rods and about half of the shake went away. changing the inner tie rods today. fortunately this isn't my daily driver so it can sit til the weekends for work. will let you know.
