Hey everyone,
Here is a stumper. I have a 1998 Navigator with 120k miles. I drove it home on Friday and all was perfect, started it up on Monday Morning and the speedometer will not work, the airbag sensor and check engine light are on, and the shifting in the transmission is sluggish.....go figure. To top it all off, when I turn the car off and rem,ove the key, the defroster blower comes on! I pulled the blower fuse so as to not drain the battery, but would appreciate any suggestions or help. If it is any help, it did rain all weekend, but ive never had any problems before.

Try unhooking the battery for a minute and see if everything resets.

I did unhook the battery. The ground connection is badly corroded, and it may even need replacing. I cleaned it with terminal cleaner and hooked it back up, but the same thing keeps happening. The check engine light reset, but the airbag indicator is still on and the tranny is still shifting in a very harsh manner. It runs great once it is in high gear, and the engine seems to be running fine. When I turn the key off and remove it, the defrost blower comes on......
Should I go ahead and replace the ground wire to the battery? Is a bad ground the possible culprit here?

I don't think the ground is the problem. There's a wiring problem somewhere. Is there any water inside? If the windshield was replaced, it could have a poor seal causing a leak. There also could be other problems, not easy to diagnose without being there.

Funny you should mention the windshield Bert. It was just replaced one month ago. I took the truck home last night and ran it for about 2 hours with the floor vents selected and the heater on full blast. Every problem has resolved except for the airbag light. The sppedo and tranny are now functioning perfectly. I did notice that the weather strip had a gap centrally, but I think I am going to return to the glass shop and have them give the seal an inspection. Hopefully if I keep things dry the airbag indicator will resolve as well....
