2001 Lincoln Navigator alternator

Need to replace the alternator on my 2001 Nav. Does not look too difficult, anyone with experience that can offer advice? Dealer wants $500+ for the job and I would rather do it myself if I can. I could not find detailed instructions on the web, so please chime in or point me in the right direction. Do I need any special tools. Thanks!

Not hard to do at all. If you get a Haynes or Ghilton manual, it will explain it very well. It will also help in other areas too. Heres the 2v procedures.
Disconnect the battery ground cable. Remove the drive belt. Disconnect the generator electrical connectors. Disconnect the generator stator and voltage regulator connectors. Remove the generator B+ cable nut and diconnect the generator B+ cable. Remove the alternator mounting bolts. There are 3.

Thanks RTG - removing the drive belt is the only thing I am really concerned about. Do i need any special tools for the tension pully?

Nothing special. I forgot if it takes a ½ or 3/8 breaker bar to turn the tensioner clockwise. Make sure you make a diagram of the belt routing if it's not under the hood somewhere.

Got it swapped out! It was very easy, thanks for the advice. I can not believe the dealer wanted $500+ for a job that took less than 2 hours (including the trip to the parts store) and less than $200 in parts.

Congrats on the DIY job!

Dealers and even local shops all have a 'book' they give quotes from. It's fairly standard pricing anywhere I go these days. I installed a new alt in my '99 Taurus just over a year ago. It took me a while due to less than stellar clearance with my tools, but I managed in just over an hour. It cost me under $200 as well for the job.
