Dealers and even local shops all have a 'book' they give quotes from. It's fairly standard pricing anywhere I go these days. I installed a new alt in my '99 Taurus just over a year ago. It took me a while due to less than stellar clearance with my tools, but I managed in just over an hour. It cost me under $200 as well for the job.
